Idris ElbaThe hashtag #OscarSoWhite has once again taken over social media thanks to Thursday morning’s Oscar nominations announcement.

Yes, “What Happened, Miss Simone?” is up for Best Documentary Feature and “Straight Outta Compton” — which was written by two white screenwriters — is up for Best Original Screenplay, but the nods mark the second consecutive year no actor or actress nor director of color were chosen among the group of nominees.

While #OscarsSoWhite 2016 may (or may not) come as a surprise to some, Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs expressed to Deadline that she was “disappointed” by the omission of African-American lead films from this year’s nominations, and added that she doesn’t want to “take away the greatness (of the films nominated).”

Previously, Isaacs stated that she has “no power” over the filmmaking process.

“The Academy has no power over Hollywood. We have nothing to do with hiring,” she said last year during a Town Hall Los Angeles Q&A luncheon. “What we can do, however, is to get them to widen their normal stream of thought.”

We decided to collectively highlight a few of the performances by people of color who had potential for netting an Oscar nod.
