#7:. Folorunsho Alakija, $1.9 billion – Nigerian, Oil
Nigeria’s only female billionaire started out as a secretary in a Nigerian bank in the 1970s, then quit her job to study fashion design in England.
She founded a Nigerian fashion label catering to wealthy clients including first ladies. She founded Famfa Oil, a Nigerian company with a substantial ownership interest in OML 127, an oil block on the Agbami deep water oilfield in Nigeria.
Here’s some wisdom from Alakija in an AfricaTopSuccess story: “money has nothing to do with love. Love comes from inside. Money is something that we acquire over time. Love is all that unites us from the beginning … it is 40 years since my husband and I have known each other.”
